When Abbey and I started planning their family session, I asked her one simple question: what does Wes love most right now? Her answer came easily: playing in the dirt and splashing in water. As I think many boy moms can attest, this is very real. So instead of choosing a manicured park or field, we decided to lean into that playful spirit and take their photos at the creek in Central Park, Chesterfield, MO.
The moment we arrived, Wes was ready to explore.
He was barefoot within minutes, fascinated by the way the water ran over the rocks and the sound it made when he tossed pebbles in. Abbey and her husband joined right in, walking hand-in-hand with him along the path and laughing as he soaked his corduroy overalls. There is something so special about seeing your little one explore the world, and as a St. Louis family photographer who specializes in documentary style sessions… I adore capturing these memories in the making.
What I love about these moments is how natural it feels.
There’s no pressure for perfect poses or stiff smiles. Just a family doing what they do best: being together.
Abbey wore a soft, neutral linen top and rolled jeans. And her husband matched the earthy tones in a brown overshirt. The warm palette blended beautifully with the greens and tans of the creek bed. I love when my clients style towards the location & vibe we are aiming for. It really creates a cohesive look. (And yes, I’ll help you with styling!)
Photos at the creek (or somewhere like it!) are a reminder that the best photos happen when you feel at ease.
Choosing a location that feels authentic to you gives kids the freedom to explore and play while parents can simply enjoy the moment. The ripples of water, the dappled light through the trees, and the little details all add texture. I love the muddy toes, wet pant legs, and big laughs in these photos. We are here to create images that feel like real memories, not just portraits.
When Abbey saw their gallery, her message said it all:
“CAMILLE. I honestly don’t know how you do it! You have a GIFT!!! They are stunning and capture his cute little personality so well!!!! The creek was a fantastic idea! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!”
That’s the heart of what I hope every family session feels like. Whether your little one loves running through fields, or, like Wes, splashing in the water: choosing a setting that reflects this season of life makes your photos mean so much more.
These are the portraits you’ll look back on in 15 years with the utmost fondness.
So if you’ve been thinking about scheduling your next family session, consider making it playful and personal. There’s something so special about photos at the creek (or your favorite park, museum or outing to the ice cream store!) where joy, curiosity, and connection flow naturally.
