There’s something different about photographing a couple in a place that already holds their rhythm. When you take photos in a place that feels familiar, it’s so much easier to relax & enjoy the entire experience. This is why your engagement session should happen where you live (imo!)
If you want those dreamy documentary style photos that feel like a rom-com movie, the first step is picking a location you love.
For this session with Rebecca and Jack, we started outside, under that striped awning with its perfectly worn charm. We spent a rainy afternoon exploring their home neighborhood and documenting this season in their lives as fiances.
We walked the streets they already know by heart.
Sidewalks lined with brick buildings. Bare winter trees stretching overhead. It really did feel like stepping into one of those dreamy movies or books, and I’m forever obsessed with how their gallery turned out because of it.This is why I always come back to this idea.
When you choose a place that already means something, everything shifts.

Here’s Why Engagement Session Should Happen Where You Live:
There’s no awkward warm-up period. No figuring out parking or trying to navigate crowds.
You inherently know where to stand or what to do with your hands. You already feel at home.
It really lends itself to the documentary style portraits we all love so much.
After we took some photos outside, we ducked into Barrio for drinks, and suddenly it felt less like a session and more like a date night I just happened to be invited to.
A glass of red wine in her hand. His arm resting casually around her. Low light, green walls, art layered behind them.
The environment wrapped around their story, magnifying the details and nostalgia.

Those in-between seconds are everything.
When you’re sharing a quiet glance across the table just the two of you… I promise those are the exact moments you’re going to want to look back on in 20 years.
And that’s the magic of staying close to home.
There are built-in real, authentic moments.
You’re not performing.
You’re just living your life, with a photographer in tow.
Because years from now, these images won’t feel dated.
They won’t feel like a trend or a location you picked because it looked good online. They’ll feel like a chapter of your actual life. The street you walked. The place you grabbed drinks. This version of you that existed right here.
And that’s the whole point.
Your engagement session should happen where you live, and that’s just something I’ll always suggest to my couples.
Not because it’s easier, though it is!
Not because it’s convenient, though that helps.
But because it tells the truth.
